Press Release: Vanishing Murals x Fish Pono-Save Our Reefs Partnership

20% of funds raised from the sale of 60 non-fungible token (NFT) digital artworks to support coral reef conservation

(Honolulu, HI) – Fish Pono–Save Our Reefs, an organization committed to bringing awareness to the importance of replenishing herbivore fish populations to foster healthy coral reefs, announced a fundraising partnership with Vanishing Murals to create 60 non-fungible token (NFT) digital artworks with 20% of each NFT sale contributed to the Fish Pono public education campaign.

The partnership between Fish Pono–Save Our Reefs and the Vanishing Murals NFT project is a unique medium of storytelling that helps share the message that by living pono, in balance with nature, we will ensure healthy reefs, abundant with life for our future ʻohana.

The Vanishing Murals NFT project is a genesis collection of 60 dynamic NFT artworks created by Hawai‘i-born artist Jana Ireijo, founder of Mural Ethos: Vanishing Murals. There are three designs in the collection, inspired by Hawai‘i’s marine life. These NFTs are a culmination of intersections across art, science and technology to remind us of the impermanence of Mother Earth and the critical role we play to help her heal.

The Vanishing Murals NFTs will be available for purchase on October 25th, 2023, at 6 p.m. HST. For more information and to purchase the Vanishing Murals NFT artworks, please visit:

"As an environmental artist, my collaboration with Fish Pono–Save Our Reefs is timely and vital as it signifies a shared commitment to preserve and protect our islands' precious and fragile coral reefs. I am honored to be included as a part of the Fish Pono 'ohana and the opportunity to contribute to a group of storytellers for the ocean, working together to create a narrative of resilience, unity, and sustainability,” shares Jana Ireijo.

Using blockchain technology and environmental data, the Vanishing Murals NFT artworks evolve to reflect the ongoing changes with Hawaii's ocean and the implications for marine life. The NFT image will change as environmental data is pulled from a verified source such as the Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS).

The NFT will reflect the idea of "vanishing", i.e., when ocean water temperatures get too high, the NFT image starts to fade; and when water temperatures move back to optimal levels, the NFT image reappears.

In addition to supporting Fish Pono–Save Our Reefs, the Vanishing Murals NFT art project will also partner with fellow artists and makers of ocean-themed or ocean-friendly products who are mission-aligned. Through these partnerships, makers will benefit from gaining access to a wider base of customers passionate about ocean conservation and protection, while holders of the NFT artworks will gain access to exclusive experiences and products by being a part of this community.

Local artists and makers participating in this project include marine debris artwork by Fish-Pono–Save Our Reefs ambassador and legendary waterman Mark Cunningham, eco-conscious ‘Alohi Kai Jewelry by The Sea, Kōkua Sun Care reef-safe sunscreens and Nadia Fairlamb Art, a Waimanalo-based artist specializing in wood-working and mirror work.

Jana began creating large scale vanishing murals, using non-permanent mediums, including foraged wildfire charcoal and earth pigments such as red dirt, alaea, ōlena, seaweed and algae to create murals that are temporary and return to earth with the elements. Her vanishing murals illustrate the effects of climate change on the environment, vulnerable species and habitats to raise awareness and inspire action. Her hope is that her art inspires the viewer with a sense of urgency to take collective action.

About Vanishing Murals NFTs
An NFT (Non-Fungible Token) is a personally owned digital image that cannot be forged or manipulated. The Vanishing Murals NFTs are artworks that have been created on canvas and then digitized as NFTs, each with ownership directly transferred by the artist, Jana Ireijo, to the collector. Each Vanishing Mural NFT in this collection is linked to oceanographic data, such that the image fades when conditions for coral reefs are poor and revives when conditions are favorable.
