Humpback Whale

I washed away this humpback whale created with wildfire charcoal and ocean water, symbolizing impermanence, grief, and resilience. I was living with this whale and slowly drawing it on my wall after the Maui wildfires - in an attempt to process the indescribable destruction. Using charcoal from the 2019 Australian and 2023 Maui fires mixed with water from Kaimana Beach, I envisioned this whale crossing the Pacific from Sydney to Maui in solidarity with their devasting fires, and now moving on to Los Angeles - carrying the weight of our collective loss and the hope of healing. We are all connected by the ocean.
